The bill grants CIO status to Ducks Unlimited, which works in coordination with the national Ducks Unlimited organization to inform students about the importance of conserving North American Wetlands and to fundraise for wetland conservation, restoration and protection initiatives.

Mark Kelly, a second-year College student and chairman of Ducks Unlimited, was in attendance to speak on behalf of the organization before Student Council voted on the bill.

“We want to be a CIO for two reasons,” Kelly said. “To be a nationally recognized chapter by Ducks Unlimited you have to be recognized by your school, and the second is to use the funds for activities like skeet shooting and building wood duck boxes, which function as habitat for migrating waterfowl.”

The bill passed unanimously with two abstentions by proxy from third-year Batten student Razan Adam and third-year College student Liya Abseno.

Student Council also passed a bill which changes the title of the Community Service Committee to the Community Relations Committee and creates the Service Committee. The bill is intended to divide the previous role of the Community Service Committee — promoting civic engagement and strengthening ties between University students and the Charlottesville community — into two separate committees.

The Community Relations Committee will now work to promote civic engagement within the student body and work with the City of Charlottesville on issues that concern students. The Service Committee will work to promote public and community service, form relationships with University staff and faculty and support student and community service organizations.

The bill also passed unanimously with two abstentions by proxy from Adam and Abseno.

Student Council also approved a bill to confirm the cabinet appointments of Alex Cintron, a third-year College president and Student Council president. The bill establishes 12 members of Student Council as the chairs of the various committees within the cabinet, such as the Student Life Committee and the Diversity Engagement Committee, among others.

The Cabinet appointment bill also passed unanimously with two abstentions by proxy from Adam and Abseno.

Ty Zirkle, a third-year College Student and vice president for organizations, also brought an appointment bill to a vote during the general body meeting. The bill approves third-year College student Daniel Higginbotham to be the chair of the Appropriations Committee, which is in charge of financial support for student organizations.

The bill also approves first-year College student Shefalika Prasad to be the chair of the CIO Consultants Committee, which is responsible for CIO applications while also supporting and developing resources for existing CIOs.

The bill passed unanimously with two abstentions by proxy from Adam and Abseno.
